Gentle Chiropractic Care for Kids, Pregnancy, and Everyone Between
From a toddler's tumble to a third-trimester backache, here is how gentle care works across the whole family.

A lot of people assume chiropractic is just for adults with sore backs. At Tyler Chiropractic, the patient list runs from infants to seniors, and families often come in together. Dr. James Smith started the practice in 1977, and his son Dr. Justin Smith joined in 2002. Dr. Justin and his wife, a pediatric nurse, are raising two boys of their own, so family care isn't an abstract idea around here.
Why children see a chiropractor
Kids get bumps. They fall off bikes, tumble off playground equipment, collide during football and soccer, and carry heavy backpacks. Babies go through the physical stress of birth and then spend months being carried, fed, and laid down in the same positions. Parents may bring a child in after a fall, after a sports injury, for back or neck complaints, or simply because the child seems sore.
We handle pediatric patients differently from adults, because they are different. Their spines are smaller and still developing, so the care is lighter and more precise.
- The doctor uses very light pressure, often just fingertip contact.
- Techniques like the Activator deliver a small, quick tap rather than a large thrust.
- Visits are shorter, and the doctor talks with the child and parent as they go.
- You're welcome to stay in the room the whole time.
We don't make promises about treating childhood illnesses, and we won't ask you to see us instead of your pediatrician. Chiropractic care for children is about musculoskeletal comfort and movement. It works alongside regular checkups, not in place of them.
Teenagers deserve a mention too. Growth spurts, heavy bags, hours with a phone or a game controller, and school sports all put steady demands on a developing back. A teen who's complaining of a stiff neck or an aching low back isn't being dramatic, and a short exam can tell you whether it's worth following up.
Pregnancy and back pain
Pregnancy changes the body quickly. The center of gravity moves forward, hormones soften the ligaments, and the pelvis and low back take on new loads. It's very common to feel aching in the low back, pain around the hips, or pressure in the pelvis, especially as the weeks go on. Sleeping, standing for long, or getting out of the car can become a real effort.
Gentle chiropractic care can help with that kind of mechanical strain. Pregnant patients are positioned for comfort, with adjustments adapted so there is no pressure on the abdomen. Your doctor will ask about your due date, any complications, and what your obstetrician has told you.
Please tell us you're pregnant when you book, even early on, and keep your OB or midwife in the loop. Severe or sudden pain, bleeding, fluid leaking, a fever, or a drop in your baby's movement are reasons to call your obstetric provider or go to the hospital right away, not to schedule a chiropractic visit.
Along with adjustments, your doctor can suggest simple habits for the weeks ahead: how to sit at a desk, how to get out of bed, which sleeping positions take pressure off the hips, and when to rest. Small changes add up when your body is carrying extra weight in a new place.
Teens, adults, and seniors
Care changes with age, and the same is true of technique. Teen athletes may come in for sports injuries and the strain of growth spurts. Adults come for desk-job neck pain, sciatica, headaches, and auto accident injuries. Seniors often prefer a gentler approach, and the Activator is a common choice, with careful attention to bone health and balance.
When parents, kids, and grandparents all see the same office, there's a side benefit. The doctors get to know your family's history, and you only have to explain it once.
What a family visit looks like
Everyone starts with a health history and a hands-on exam, no matter the age. If x-rays are warranted, we'll explain why, and we only recommend them when they would change the plan. Then you get a report of findings in plain language: what we found, what we recommend, and how often to come in. Nobody gets adjusted without understanding what's about to happen, and kids are told in words they can follow.
A few tips make it easier. Tell your child it's a gentle checkup, not a shot. Bring a favorite stuffed animal for a nervous little one. Wear comfortable clothes. Let us know about any medications, past injuries, or conditions.
Start with a free consultation
Questions about whether chiropractic is right for your child, or for your pregnancy, are exactly what the free consultation is for. Bring your concerns and any notes from your pediatrician or OB. We'll tell you honestly what we can help with and what we can't.
