Chiropractic adjustments

Hands-on, specific adjustments to restore motion to stiff, guarded joints of the spine and extremities.

A joint that has quit moving the way it should

Most people who walk into Tyler Chiropractic at 945 S. Baxter Ave cannot point to the moment it started. What they describe is a stiffness that sits on one side, a neck that turns easily to the left and stops short to the right, or a low back that feels guarded, as if it is bracing for the next movement. A fixated joint tends to be that specific: one level of the spine, one direction, one side.

That one-sided, guarded quality is exactly what the doctors look for. Dr. James Smith, who has practiced in Tyler since 1977, and his son Dr. Justin Smith both start from the same idea: a joint that has lost its normal motion is worth finding by hand, not by guess. The muscles around it often tighten to protect it, which is why the ache can show up an inch or two from the real source. If this sounds familiar, the first consultation is free, and the office is at (903) 595-2664.

From the first question to the final re-check

An adjustment visit starts with talking, not with the table. The doctor asks where it hurts, when it began, what makes it better or worse, and how your health history fits in. Then comes palpation: trained hands moving along the spine, feeling for the spot where a joint resists, where the tissue is tender, where one side is tighter than the other. A first visit also includes an exam and, when the findings call for it, x-rays.

The adjustment itself is a quick, specific thrust to the one joint that needs it, with a hand contact set at a deliberate angle on the Anatomotor table. Some joints make a sound and some do not; the sound is not the measure of a good adjustment. Afterward the doctor re-checks your motion and tenderness to see whether the joint is moving better. If you would rather skip the thrust, the activator treatment does the same job with a small instrument.

The days after, and when to come back

Plenty of patients feel looser the same day, and some feel a little sore, the way muscles do after an unfamiliar workout. One patient wrote in a Google review that she was still a bit sore afterward and felt fully better two days later. That settling-in is common, though every body responds differently. Gentle movement usually serves you better than lying flat all day, and if anything feels sharply worse, call the office rather than waiting it out.

How often you return depends on what the exam found, and it is laid out in the recommended course of care you receive at the report of findings. A recent strain tends to need a short run of visits, while older, repeated problems tend to need a longer plan. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with a shorter Thursday. Questions before you book are welcome on our contact page, and the free consultation is a good place to start.
